People read for many reasons. We read to find a place in history, to understand the political and ideological space we live in, or to let trashy romance wash right over us. We drink wine for many of the same reasons. If we think about it as something that smells and tastes a certain way, we’re only enjoying a couple of its possibilities. Wine is historically important; it’s also an ideological and economic weapon, an agricultural commodity, a cultural indicator, and a fine source of pleasure (for all of these reasons and because it smells and tastes good).
